Air pollution poses significant risks not only to the health and performance of professional athletes and amateur sports enthusiasts but also to the well-being of spectators. In response to this challenge, the organizers of the Hong Kong Standard Chartered Marathon partnered with Sapiens to establish a comprehensive air quality monitoring network along the event route.
This innovative system provides real-time data on pollutant levels at key locations, including the Tsim Sha Tsui start line, the Western District Tunnel, and other points. Also, it is the first-ever comprehensive inline air quality broadcasting the Air Quality Health Index throughout a major event, empowering the participants to make informed decisions based on their activity levels and exposure.
This initiative represents a significant milestone in marathon history and underscores the growing acknowledgment of air pollution as a critical factor affecting athletic performance and public health. Beyond benefiting participants directly, the real-time air quality data will enable organizers to gain insights into urban pollution patterns, optimizing future event arrangements and route planning for safer and healthier experiences. This approach has since served as reference for air quality reporting on other major sporting competitions.
